Li Na has won the Western and Southern Open by defeating Angelique Kerber of Germany in the final match. Li had to struggle hard for winning the match. She made a comeback after losing the first set and won the match by 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. This is the first title won by Li after the French Open last year. She had reached the final of the Rogers Cup a few days ago, but, she was defeated by Petra Kvitova in the final there. But, Li held her nerves this time around and won a title after a long time.
Kerber made a very good start to the match and got a breakthrough in the second game of the first set. She served out the next game to take a lead of 3-0. In the next two games, both the players held their service and the scorecard was saying 4-1. Li’s service was broken again in the sixth game. Kerber held her service in the next game to grab the first set by 6-1. Kerber was off to a blistering start in the second set as well. She won the first three games again to make the score 3-0. But, Li came back strongly in the match and won the next 6 games consecutively to seal the second set by 6-3. In the final set, Li played like a champion. She didn’t give Kerber any chance and ran away with the third set. She broke Kerber’s service in the second game and then held her service in the next game to take a lead of 3-0. The next two games went with the serve. Li got the second breakthrough in the 6th game and then, served out the next game to claim the title.
Li seemed to be quite relieved after winning the final match. She said that Kerber’s performance in the first set was unbelievable. But, in the second set, she lost her control on the match. As per Li, She would like to continue her good form in the US Open as well.
