Li Na has been defeated in the very first round of the women’s tennis singles tournament of London Olympics by Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia. Hantuchova won the match by 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. The Chinese player fought hard, but, didn’t play well enough to beat the former world no. 5 Hantuchova. China had massive hopes with Li Na. She did a lot of mistakes in the match and also didn’t serve well. The number of double faults served by her in the match was 5.
The last few days have not been good for the Chinese superstar. She was defeated in the second round of the Wimbledon Championship a few days back. Li Na won the French Open in 2011. But, after that tournament, there has been a consistent deterioration in her performances. After the match, Li Na said that she didn’t play well in the first and the third set. Hantuchova played better tennis and she deserved to win the match.
As per Li Na, it is one of the saddest days of her career. It has been her dream since the childhood to win an Olympic medal. She thought that she had a good chance to win a medal this time around, but, it’s unfortunate that she has been defeated in the very first round.
However, the Chinese player said that she still can win an Olympic medal by performing well in the doubles competition. In the doubles event, Li Na will play with Zhang Shuai. As per Li Na, she doesn’t play doubles too often and she hasn’t played with Zhang Shuai before. She is not aware of the playing style of Zhang Shuai and it would not be easy to play with her. But, she said that she would give her best and try to win a medal for her country in the doubles competition.

Chinese tennis player, Li Na, has said that she would give her best in the upcoming Wimbledon tournament and would prove her critics wrong. Li Na had won the French open in 2011. She became a super star in China and all over Asia after that. Before Li Na, no Asian tennis player had ever won a Grand Slam Singles title. After that, she got a lot of commercial contracts and started earning a lot. But, unfortunately, after that French Open, she hadn’t been able to produce the same kind of performance. She hadn’t won any other tournament after that.
Li Na has been criticized a lot due to her continuous inconsistent performances after the French open 2011. It has been said that her wealth is distracting her and she is not focusing enough on the tennis. According to Forbes Rich list, Li Na is one of the richest athletes in the world at the moment. Li has the commercial contracts of the top companies in the world Nike, Mercedes and many more. On being asked about that, Li said that her commercial contracts are not responsible for her inconsistent performances. She said that in the grand slams, you have to compete with the world’s best players and it’s not necessary that every time you will win. She said that she is practicing hard and hopefully, she would do better in the Wimbledon.
In the official rankings of World Tennis Association (WTA), Li is at no. 11 right now. Li had been in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon previously. She made it to the quarterfinals two times before i.e. in 2006 and 2010. In 2006, she had been defeated by Kim Klisters while in 2010, Serena Williams had defeated her. But, Li is pretty hopeful that she would go beyond the quarterfinals this time around and hopefully would win the title.
Chinese tennis player Li Na has vowed that she will come back to the All England Club in 20 days’ time, wearing the red of China and will be aiming for the top prize to silence all those critics who have blasted her performances over the last few months.
All of China will be looking at Li to lead the charge for China in the women’s tennis arena and after being knocked out of Wimbledon unceremoniously in the second round just a few days back, she will have that extra incentive to go for the Gold Medal at the London Olympic Games.
The 30 year old became the first Asian player in the history of tennis to win a Grand Slam title when she overcame the odds to win the French Open title at Roland Garros in 2011, but since then, she has failed to reach the quarter finals in any of the five Grand Slam events that she has participated in.
