Na Li Bio

Li Na, the famous Chinese tennis player was born in 26th February 1982 in Hubei, China and has won 5 WTA and 19 ITF single titles which gained her the rank of World No.6 by WTA. Her victory during the 2011 French Open singles title made her the first to represent Asian countries by winning a Grand Slam in singles and had delivered terrific performance in the 2011 Australian Open.

At a tender age of 14 she had lost her father, Li Shengpeng, who used to be a professional badminton player and introduced Li Na to badminton at the age of 6. After 2 years she had decided to switch over from badminton to tennis as it was encouraged by her coach Xia Xiyao of the Wuhan youth tennis club and her parents were convinced about her career progress in the field of tennis and thus she joined the national tennis club in 1997.

Li had then compeleted her bachelor’s degree in journalism in 2009 and somehow this got her personal and professional life under the glare of Chinese media which reported half-truths and half rumors about various aspects of her tennis career and relationship issues. In 2004 she returned back to the national team and married her former tennis partner Jiang Shan who later became her personal coach. However, in 2008 she had quit from both the national team and the state-run sports system to experiment a new freedom which allowed her to choose her own coach and staffs and this had let her keep the higher percentage of her winnings, which otherwise was getting reduced by almost 65%, before she had a part of it.

The years between 1999 and 2004 saw Li winning 20 women’s singles titles and 19 ITF events on the WTA tour followed by winning her second WTA tour title in 2008. These victorious events in the midst of crisis, droughts and challenges sealed her success and paved further way for her progress. The following years had seen her entering several singles and doubles matches, wherein she had made her own mark by either winning the titles or by reaching closest to the finals and thus has proved all her critics wrong.

However, just like any other renowned players her career too was affected by a series of injuries and troubles that kept her from playing for lengthy periods. Ankle injuries and rib injuries had done great damages to her tennis career by not letting her play some important matches. The current year of 2011 has seen her playing glorious and honorable matches against well-known players and at the same time, she kept on marching ahead with her several victories and significant performances which brought her galore of applause and recognition.

Her determination, focus, inner strength and resilience in the face of criticisms, personal losses and rumors could not stop her from reaching and achieving the best moments of her tennis career. She has proved the entire world wrong by representing Asian countries in the international arena and thus by making her Chinese fans proud of her.
